Recent high-profile tragedies and violence in the athletic world and sports entertainment industries are adding much concern towards injuries facing so called gladiator athletes.

The medical community at large agrees on the need to protect athletes from the dangers of the “win at all costs” mentality that can lead to serious injuries, that can last a lifetime.

Any athletic pursuit involves an injury risk. Obviously, risks differ greatly depending on the chosen activity. High-risk contact sports carry the greatest danger to the athletes well-being and future career aspirations.

Dr. David Reiss, a San Diego based psychiatrist and expert witness in the current litigation against the NFL over player concussions wants to see a change in play mentality. Currently players are “encouraged to tolerate pain for the good of the team”. Coaches, parents and teammates also urge players to “get back on the field”, though they may still be in a daze and suffering from a serious head injury.

Dr. David Reiss joins us LIVE to discuss “Gladiators in the 21st century”, on Wednesday, October 30 @ 7PM EST at BEYONDtheCheers on blogtalkradio. Dial-in TOLL FREE 1-877-357-2448 in Canada and United States to ask a question, or email in advance.
