Many young hockey players hold on to the dream of the NHL some day, but those who take advantage of the opportunity to play in Europe can make more money than they would ever see in Canada.

Former Canadian NHL player, Reid Simpson, made $400K tax-free each year over two seasons with Chekhov. The most he ever made in twelve NHL seasons was $500K.

The “Kontinentalnaya Hokkeynaya Liga , known as the KHL, was started in 2008 by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The aim was to create a strong cross-ocean rival to the NHL, with the best European players, namely Russians, to showcase their national pride.

Austrian goaltender, Bernd Brückler, played in the KHL for three seasons. He opens the curtain to shed some light on life in Russian hockey, in his memoir,
