TEXT: Matthew 5:38-42
J.C. Ryle said, "A readiness to resent injuries, a quickness in taking offence, a quarrelsome and contentious disposition, a keenness in asserting our rights, -- all -- all are contrary to the mind of Christ. The world may see no harm in these habits of the mind; but they do not become the character of the Christian."
It is difficult for many of us to take the words of Jesus in this passage to heart. We are naturally inclined to resist any harm or offense done to us. The flight or fight response is deeply ingrained. In a world that is fraught with more danger than ever, we must wrestle with Jesus' command to "resist not evil." Does He mean that one should not fight back if his life is threatened? Does He mean that one should not defend his family? His property? Yea, even the church he attends now?
