Do you believe new hiphop artists owe homage to the pioneers of hiphop?

Many recording artists have made money sampling recording artists that existed decades prior. Legendary recording artists do not make the same amount of money that present day Hiphop artists make, and some are bitter, while others have recreated themselves. The passing of the torch was not completely official, and so many artists today do not feel they owe anything to the creators of the genre. What do you think?
