Epiphany Castro was born and raised in Berkeley, California. She grew up in a rich environment which has traceable roots to New Orleans. Surrounded by family members who were knowledgeable of music fundamentals, she began singing and performing in church at age 5. She began dancing and acting in school at the age 7. During this time, she also began writing journals and has been writing ever since.
Epiphany studied Theatre Arts at San Francisco State University. From 1985-1988, she performed with the band Shy Hand with Dwayne Higgins of Toni Tonee Tony. From 1988-1994 she performed with Riot Going On. She was also a session singer for various studios. She has appeared at venues in London, primarily as a songwriter. After returning to the United States, she embraced the stage once again, playing local gigs in the San Francisco/BayArea.
In 2007, Epiphany surrendered to pen and paper and began writing poetry. Soon after, she released a book called Everything and Nothing.. Finding a different muse, she began taking spoken word more seriously. Encouraged by artists and friends, Epiphany began her BlogTalkRadio show Epiphany’s House on Sunday afternoons.
On the second Friday of each month, Epiphany hosts Sessions Live West Coast-a spoken word event at Dorsey’s Locker. To date this venue has seen the likes of the incredible spoken word duo Tribal Raine and Max Parthas, the Chairman of the Board, and Lyrical Toye, just to name a few.
Slowly honing her craft in open mic houses and internet radio, Epiphany, has created a huge and diverse following within the spoken word community. Her first solo project Soul Flower has become a favorite among avid fans of spoken word. On this project, she demonstrates her many influences like Billie Holiday, Lewis Taylor, and the legendary group; Earth, Wind and Fire. Her voice rings with truth and confidence, as the melodic lyrics entice the senses with a unique and eloquent passion.
