Tonight's special guest is Dr. Janet Rosenzweig, author of "The Sex-Wise Parent: The Parent's Guide to Protecting Your Children, Strengthening Your Family, and Talking to Your Kids about Sex, Abuse and Bullying." Janet writes, "Abusers count on the fact that kids don't like to speak to their parents about sex, and you don't want that to be true on your family. So use the news — with the Sandusky trial starting in a few weeks and on-going clergy trials in many major media markets, there will be plenty of opportunity!" She says to use this as an opportunity to tell your kids that people who sexually abuse children put their own pleasure above the pain they cause children. Remind them that sometimes they dress it up like a friendship or a love relationship to confuse the child (or teen!). Remind them that anyone who wants to be sexual with a young person is selfish at best and a criminal at worse. Dr. Janet Rosenzweig’s credentials as a sex educator led to a position with one of the first sex abuse projects in the U.S. more than three decades ago. Her experience as a caseworker, help-line counselor, professor, researcher, author, public official, child-abuse prevention specialist and mother inspired the creation of a resource so that parents can do what public systems cannot — ensure the sexual health and safety of their children and family. An inspirational speaker and teacher, Dr. Rosenzweig is devoted to reaching professionals and parents everywhere with the advice and techniques they need to raise sexually safe and healthy kids.
