Entrepreneurship teaches young people that what they are learning in the classroom is, in fact, relevant to the real world. Today, we’re looking at one remarkable organization, NFTE, the Network for Teaching for Entrpreneurship. Founded in New York City in 1987 by Steve Mariotti,a former entrepreneur turned high school math teacher in the South Bronx, he discovered that when young people from low-income communities are given the opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship, their innate "street smarts" can easily develop into "academic smarts" and "business smarts." Through entrepreneurship, he realized, young people discover that what they are learning in the classroom is relevant to the real world. Patricia Alper sits on the Local and National Board of NFTE. She joins us today from Washington DC as well as two NFTE graduates, Bruce and Glen Proctor, NY-based twin brothers who benefited from NFTE big time! They're about to launch their new accessories line in November. Go check out NFTE and find out more about what they do, why they do it, and get involved www.nfte.com
