Join us every Tues. 8-9 PM EST only on OORadio. Ifa is an art form as well as a spiritual system for healing and guidance. Whether we acknowledge it or not, the natural and metaphysical forces that guided our ancient ancestors still remain – they didn't just go away with the advent of the industrial age and other trappings of modern societies that made our lives more convenient. For the majority of us, we don't encounter those forces- knowingly, at least- unless we are facing life-altering experiences or problems, or deep spiritual dilemmas. Those with personal problems or difficult situations have taken solace in church, therapy sessions, or even the confidence of a friend or close family member who is easy to talk to. However, another resource that Americans of African descent especially- and people of other cultural backgrounds generally- are now realizing they can tap into the spiritual traditions of their West African forbearersfor a deeper understanding of the roots of those problems, and workable solutions to resolve them. Whether we acknowledge it or not, the natural and metaphysical forces that guided our ancient ancestors still remain – they didn’t just go away with the advent of the industrial age and other trappings of modern societies that made our lives more convenient. For the majority of us, we don’t encounter those forces- knowingly, at least- unless we are facing life-altering experiences or problems, or deep spiritual dilemmas. Those with personal problems or difficult situations have taken solace in church, therapy sessions, or even the confidence of a friend or close family member who is easy to talk to. Listening to his parents' jazz and gospel records and studying Langston Hughes and other great poets in school helped nurture Oyewole's love of poetry. His mother taught him to "throw [his] voice" by making him recite the Lord's Prayer in their basement so that she could hear him in the kitchen. When he was 15, Charles Davis and a friend went into a Yoruban Temple in Harlem out of curiosity. The Yoruba priest there performed a ceremony with Charles and gave him the name Abiodun Oyewole. He began reading about the Yoruba gods and the significance of one's ancestors, and felt a deep spiritual connection to the religion: "I could say a prayer to my ancestors every morning so they could help me through my life. [That] made all the sense in the world to me." The Last Poets were born on May 19, 1968, when David Nelson, Gylan Kain, and Abiodun Oyewole read poetry at a memorial for Malcolm X. Their goal was to be a poetic voice for Malcolm's call for self-determination and black nationalism. Like many black activists of the time, they were tired of Martin Luther King's integrationist agenda. They were much more influenced by the politics of radical members of the SNCC (Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee), the SDS (Students for a Democratic Society), and the Black Panthers. :  02:12:00OORadionoAbiodun Oyewole,Yoruba Temple,The Last Poets,Poet,AuthorAbiodun Oyewole grew up Charles Davis in Queens, NY. But then, before majoring in Black Studies and learning African American history, it had not occurred to me that I was not a Negro, but an African. I had been a good, Black Missionary Baptist who believed everything my mother, my deacon father, my preacher and my Sunday school teachers told me about ethics and values. I had only known, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". The greatest joy of Oginga Khamisi is to share the wealth of his “life’s work” promoting the appreciation for African Culture, sharing his talent, skill and experiences through workshops lectures/ demonstrations, and residences in African Drums. In 1978 under the instruction of Dele Ejioba Baile McKinght of Washington D.C. During the years of 1980-1983, he received training in drumming from Cosanan African Drum and Dance Conference at the Institute for the Study of African Culture, in St. Louis, Missouri. At the institute, he learned special hand techniques traditionally cultivated for centuries from Senegal, The Gambia and Guinea, West Africa. In 1983, he learned to make the necessary tools used in the carving of drums, by studying the art of blacksmithing, at the Studbaker Farm located in Tipp City, Ohio. From 1989-1998, Oginga studied African drumming in Washington, D.C. at the Kankouran West African Dance Company Conference. There he learned more drum patterns from various master drummers. In 1990, while under Oginga’s musical direction, Oginga, and seven members of the Afrikan-American Drum and Dance Ensemble toured Senegal, and The Gambia, West Africa studying and experiencing the culture of African people.
