About Town and About 1978 with writer, videomaker GREG YOUMANS and RAYMOND HELKIO, designer, writer, activist local boy The film WORD IS OUT came out in 1978 when queer was still a bad word and people still complained about people taking a nice word like "gay" and making it sexual - geesh! The film was unprecedented and featured a diverse group of queers talking about being queer in their worlds. It aired on PBS, people watched it and the world changed a little. Greg Youmans wrote a book about the film as part of the QUEER FILM CLASSICS, a critically acclaimed film book series that launched in 2009; the series will cover twenty-one of the most important and influential films about and by LGBTQ people, made in eight different countries between 1950 and 2005, written by leading LGBTQ film scholars and critics. The series will unspool at the rate of three new titles each year until 2015.
