Keep these things in mind as you write: 

1. Become a careful observer of people and events around you. "He is a great observer, and he looks / Quite through the deeds of men" (Shakespeare, Julius Caesar). 

2. Write down your observations. Keep a blank book handy for writing careful descriptions of people and places. Keep paper and pencil by your bed at night so that when ideas come you are ready to write them down--then you'll be able to get back to sleep. I have been writing in blank books since college...
