It's been a few months since we chatted with the Director of the Cape Downwinders, Diane Turco. Since then the power station continued a downhill spiral from a forced 12-day shutdown caused by electrical problems. In mid October Entergy Corp announced it would close the plant by June 2019.
Diane is advocating for a closure far sooner than 2019 because the public's safety is in even greater danger since Entergy has no incentive to invest money to maintain the plant.
We'll hear what is being done to speed up the decommissioning process and how it can be done safely.
Diane Turco is a retired special education teacher and lives in Harwich, MA. After learning of the threat from the Pilgrim nuclear reactor to the public and environment in the late 1980s and the lack of protection for the public at the state and federal level, she began to work for public safety and continues to investigage, educate and agitate for the closings of nuclear reactors.
The mission of Cape Downwinders is to take action to protect the lives and welfare of the residents of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket against the threat of injury or death resulting from the production of nuclear power at the Pilgrim reactor in Plymouth.
