Do you know what the leading cause of death in the African American Community since 1973 is? Think about it for a minute. Is it heart disease-2,266,789 deaths since 1973, cancer-1,638,350, or accidents-370,723? Is it AIDS-203,695, or violent crimes-306, 313? There is one possibility that is often overlooked. It happens 1452 times a day in our community. It has taken over 13 million Black lives within the last 30 years. It has taken 1/3 of our present population. What is it? ABORTION! Ecerpt from article Silent No More: A Major Crisis in the African-American Communityby Rev. John J. Raphael, SSJ Howard University, Washington, DC Recently, a friend sent me video of a lovely American Tea Party rally. There was a man holding a sign targeting black women for having so many abortions. I was really awe-struck. I 'd never thought about my community on these terms... But it's true the Centers for Disease Control and the Alan Guttmacher Institute all bear these numbers out. Though most African American politicians and most liberals among which I count myself are pro-choice it's numbers like these that make me concerned for the health and continued well-being of the African American community... On Mon. at 10 AM PST we'll speak with Dr. Alveda King, neice of Dr. Martin Luther King, pro-life activist and author. Dr. King is pro-life, advocate of Proposition 8 and vocal supporter of John McCain... While she's a staunch conservative and I may not agree with her on every front... I find myself emotionally connected to some of the concerns of the pro-life movement. While we may find ourselves on different sides of this fence or straddling the fence as individuals...my question for this morning is What Do Our Pastors Say? Dr. King and Minister Thomas Bowen from the infamous Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington, DC join us.
