S05/E08: Michigan Alliance for Special Education - Marcie Lynn Lipsitt

SPECIAL GUEST: MARCIE LYNN LIPSITT

For the past 21 years, our guest has been a mother of her inspiration and hero, her son Andrew. He has severe learning disabilities which includes NLD, CAPD and EFD. In addition, he suffers from early biopolar disorder, Obesessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), ADHD and multiple anxiety disorders and medical morbidities.

Currently, Marcie is the founder and co-chair of the Michigan Alliance for Special Education, a grassroots advocacy organization that has held a rally on the steps of the Michigan Capitol. Her efforts have been instrumental in forcing Michigan to raise the standards required for secondary special education teachers. Marcie also proudly sits on the Massachusetts General Hospital Pediatric Psychopharmacology Advisory Council and lobbies tirelessly for mental health parity.
The issue of mental health has been bounced around like a political football by mostly Republican politicians. More action is needed to provide for people with mental disorders and see to it that proper care is given to them so they can function better in our society.
