Not only is the concept of wisdom complex and difficult to define, the process of teasing it out from other overlapping qualities has proved formidable.    Recently, some fascinating and brand-new research about wisdom has appeared in the news. University of Michigan professor of psychology and researcher, Ethan Kross, in a recently published article co-authored with doctoral student Igor Grossman, has found some promising ways that people can actually teach themselves to be wiser.  They have conducted several experiments that demonstrate that consciously adopting a particular perspective can change the way we respond to certain circumstances, and guide us to make wiser decisions and choose wiser actions. Our honored guest tonight is Dr. Ethan Kross. Columbia educated, an esteemed researcher and the Director of the University of Michigan's Emotion and Self-Control Laboratory, his work has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), among others.  It has been published in leading scientific journals, and disseminated to the public at large through such media outlets as: the CBS Evening News, the New York Times, CNN, Time, Newsweek and Oprah Magazine. Everyone in healthcare knows that the lack of accountability negatively impacts care, and, they recognize that when accountability improves throughout a healthcare organization, care improves.  Tune in tonight as Dr. Wong describes  the real keys to creating an accountable culture in  our healthcare systems.  Join Lisa Pasbjerg, executive coach and CEO of Focused Coaching, as she picks his brain about how to eliminate this accountability  dilemma,  what tools and approach are needed to make this possible without adding more to healthcare  leaders' already overflowing plates, and finally, why he believes "Heroes Need Not Apply." 00:30:00Lisa PasbjergnoBrian Wong MD,accountable care, healthcare leadership,Lisa Pasbjerg, executive coachingDr.  Brian Wong looks at things a little bit differently.  A physician himself, with both a Doctorate of Medicine and a Masters in Public Health from the UniveLiveWorkDetroit : Shining a Light on the City's Besthttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/the-leadership-focus-radio-show/2013/02/06/liveworkdetroit-shining-a-light-on-the-citys-bestBusinesshttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/the-leadership-focus-radio-show/2013/02/06/liveworkdetroit-shining-a-light-on-the-citys-best/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/the-leadership-focus-radio-show/2013/02/06/liveworkdetroit-shining-a-light-on-the-citys-bestWed, 06 Feb 2013 23:00:00 GMTLiveWorkDetroit : Shining a Light on the City's Best Started less than a year ago,  this wildly successful  new program is already effectively shining a spotlight on the wonderful things Detroit has to offer for young professionals.   LiveWorkDetroit had its first event in March 2011. Those that are already in the work force are now between the ages of 18 to 33.  If you are a "Baby Boomer"(those most likely to currently be senior leaders, or a "GenXer",  you most certainly already know that this group entering the workplace has caused some "tension", (to say the least), and that a "business as usual" approach to handling them has not necessarily been working.  With this 80 million strong cohort aging into the workforce rapidly and the equally large Baby Boomer generation aging out, managers are experiencing new demands on their skill sets and competencies and receiving little direction about what is likely to actually be effective.   Tonight we are going to take a look at the current and increasing challenges presented to managers and leaders, and what are the core competencies the research is showing they need to develop in order to most effectively work with and utilize the potential of this generation.  Unlike just another discussion of anecdotal examples, our interview tonight with author, researcher and professor, Chip Espinoza will discuss the knowledge he gained from the research he and his colleagues completed on this subject.   Join us tonight as Lisa Pasbjerg, executive coach and CEO of Focused Coaching, LLC reaches for some real specifics from this guest expert about the essential core competencies needed to facilitate the successful integration and management of millennials into the workplace for today and tomorrow.00:38:00Lisa PasbjergnoChip Espinoza,Millennials, leadership, managing,Lisa PasbjergIf you were born between 1978 and 1996, you probably know your generation has been tagged "the Millennials", or, alternatively "GenY." The bank's commitment as a partner more than doubles the original $3 billion capacity of PMBC. As a program partner, Fifth Third Bank has the capacity to make new loans totaling $2.5 billion to Michigan businesses in 2012 alone, and it represents the largest commitment by a financial institution to date. The PMBC program is a public-private initiative that provides Michigan businesses with new ways to buy and sell, raise capital and connect with each other through an alliance of the Michigan Economic Development Corp., state agencies and major Michigan companies and organizations. Tech Town, The New Enterprise  Forum,The Renaissance Venture Capital Foundation and the work of the Michigan Women's Foundation to support women-owned businesses, are just a few of the dozens of reasons Michigan entrepreneurs are positioned to lead the country in new business growth.  Indeed, Robert Buderi, Editor and Chief of Xeconomy, was recently quoted as saying, " If Michigan were a stock, I would be buying a bunch of options to it." Join us tonight as leadership development expert. Lisa Pasbjerg, interviews Lanny White and Mark Reynolds of GrowBiz based in Ann Arbor, about their "take" on the Michigan growth phenomena. Such statistics are not entirely a surprise, given the current state of the economy, the number of layoffs that have occurred and the extreme insecurity many workers feel about their ability to retain their jobs and their ability to replace them if their position is eliminated.  What is surprising is the size of the increase in charges to the Agency and the fact that, for the first time, the majority of the claims arenot about race. Clearly, employers need to be ever more aware of their responsibilities in this area, particularly in cases of transfer, demotion, downsizing and restructuring.  Join us tonight as our host Lisa Pasbjerg, executive coach and principal at the leadership development firm, Focused Coaching, LLC, interviews Dr. Leah Hollis, noted author, educator and researcher in the field.  Speaking from the research she has gathered in the writing of her latest book, "Unequal Opportunity", Dr. Hollis will answer our questions about where the common and the most often overlooked problems are in this area, and how employers can  more easily avoid getting into trouble 00:30:00Lisa PasbjergnoLeah Hollis, retaliation,EEOC,Lisa Pasbjerg, workplaceRecent statistics release by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), produced some startling facts.  Charges of retaliation are up, way up.  TheA Dream Realized for Women's and Children's Health https://www.blogtalkradio.com/the-leadership-focus-radio-show/2011/12/07/dream-finally-realized-for-womens-and-childrens-healthBusinesshttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/the-leadership-focus-radio-show/2011/12/07/dream-finally-realized-for-womens-and-childrens-health/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/the-leadership-focus-radio-show/2011/12/07/dream-finally-realized-for-womens-and-childrens-healthWed, 07 Dec 2011 23:00:00 GMTA Dream Realized for Women's and Children's Health A long-cherished dream, and the result of over ten years of work and planning, is finally coming to fruition here in Ann Arbor with the opening of the new C.S. Many people who know they need to do it to benefit their business, or, their short and long-term career plan,  are simply tired of putting out the effort, especially when they don't seem to be seeing much in terms of results.  How good are you at networking?  Does it flow easily for you, or is it something that is difficult and that you know you would benefit from being better at, but wish were not so hard?  If you, like many people, are just plain tired of going through the process, you are at a state we call "networking fatigue." Scott DeRue believes organizations routinely get leadership development wrong, and, he believes that this is for a number of reasons.  Among the deterrents to organizations getting it right is the relentless pressure on today's senior executives for immediate performance and quick gains, another he describes as "our deeply held belief in innate talent" versus developing capabilities and learned mastery. In addition, a common obstacle is that the responsibility for leaders' professional development is often (inappropriately) placed with human resources rather than with the leaders themselves. DeRue believes that more emphasis should be placed on teaching both emerging leaders and continuously learning senior leaders how to be more self-directed and proactive about their own leadership development. And, he believes that in teaching leaders how to more effectively learn from their experiences, we will create more empowered and stronger leaders and better organizations. Join us tonight as Lisa Pasbjerg, executive coach and CEO of Focused Coaching, LLC, a leadership development firm based in Ann Arbor, Michigan interviews this young, focused and already highly esteemed faculty member at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business. Through this and other social media, people are connecting with others and sharing ideas all over the world in mere seconds. Only a few short years ago, these connections would have taken hours, days or weeks to occur, or, more likely, would never have occurred at all. Through the momentum created by this rapid technological change, and the millions of bits of 140-character-or-less content moving ever faster around the globe, individuals and organizations are transcending cultures and geographies and adapting, (whether they like it or not), to the dramatically increasing diversity of their experiences and interactions with others. Companies are scrambling to write policies to manage this "sea change", recognizing that they need to plan to utilize it effectively rather than try to stop the flow. Tonight your host, executive coach, Lisa Pasbjerg, will be interviewing Deepika Bajaj, founder of Invincibelle, a company whose mission is empowering a diverse, multigenerational workforce, on her views on social media, and, how it is shaping a more diverse and rapidly changing multicultural world. Ms. Bajaj, a consultant, speaker and author, utilizes her rich experience in telecommunications consulting and corporate marketing to help others to learn how to manage diversity and be successful in today's competitive market place. What do you say after you say "Hello"? How do you even get to "Hello."? How do you make the leap between meeting someone and actually doing something useful with that connection? How can you enjoy networking more, and at the same time, get greater value out of your investment of time and energy?
