Dr. Daniel Everett is a linguist and the Dean of Arts and Sciences at Bentley university. He's known for his work with the Pirahã people of the Amazon Basin. His work presents a challenge to the Chomskyan theory of universal grammar and has been the subject of much debate among those interested in the evolution of language.
His book, Don't Sleep, There Are Snakes: Life and Language in the Amazonian Jungle, tells of his experiences in the Amazon. It is known among freethinkers for the chapter in which Dr. Everett tells the story of his loss of faith at the hands of the Pirahã when his aim had been to convert them to Christianity.
