Dr. Tyson is the Director of the American Museum of Natural History’s Hayden Planetarium and a Research Associate in the museum’s Department of Astrophysics. Having received his BA from Harvard and his PhD from Columbia, and having previously held positions at the University of Maryland and Princeton University, he has been an earnest and forthright communicator of science and the scientific worldview. With research interests centering on subjects ranging from the formation and evolution of stars, plus cosmology and galactic astronomy, he has appeared on numerous television programs for the communication of science and scientific concepts and has been an adviser to NASA. Just last year it was announced that he and Seth McFarland of Family Guy fame will be creating a update/sequel to Carl Sagan’s justifiably famous Cosmos series to air in 2013. The author of Death By Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries and Origins: 14 Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution, his new book just released is Space Chronicles: Facing The Ultimate Frontier. The last time there was a Space Race we won because we actually got in the race. But is there a new space race? If so, what’s going to be our “Sputnik Moment”? Who’s our competition in the race this time? And will we enter the race before they’re planting flags on Mars?
