The word "dharma" comes from the Sanskrit root dhri, meaning to "uphold" or to "sustain." Dharma is a cosmic principle that is difficult, if not impossible, to define.

Dharma is usually translates as "the way things are" and has been used to imply "the laws of nature" or "that which sustains the universe."

From this perspective, the best way to think of dharma is to say, "that which upholds or sustains the positive order of things: the nation, the community, the family and ultimately even the universe."

Our Dharma is our true place in the cosmic process: in time, in space, in awareness, in thought, deed and desire. Dharma is the individual’s natural, selfless duty, a responsibility towards self, parents, family, society, community, environment, and humanity.

Practicing Dharma is the supreme method for improving the quality of our human life. The quality of life depends not upon external development or material progress, but upon the inner development of peace and happiness.

The purpose of dharma is not only to attain a union of the soul with the supreme reality, it also suggests a code of conduct that is intended to secure both joy and happiness.
