There are countless cults past and present. There are also myriad types of cults; from apocalyptic cults, to political cults, to religious cults, and more. No demographic or socioeconomic threshold is immune to the potential influence of a cult, or be incapable of cult-like behavior. Today, self-inflicted isolation occurs across the globe in the privacy of one’s own home via the internet and digital technology.

The leaders in Jonestown, Rajneesheepuram, and Heaven’s Gate demonstrated many traits of both schizophrenia and narcissism. What impact would technology have had on recruiting, isolating, and controlling followers?
