First, a big thank you to Lydia Liebman - a publicist who takes her job seriously. She made it a point to convince Lakecia Benjamin that a Libra sister wanted to talk to her :) HOW this Golden Goddess has the time to do ANYTHING after this year is anyone's guess. For many, 2020 has been a nightmare. For Lakecia, it has been staggeringly successful.
This is a charismatic and STRONG saxophonist, bandleader, and composer. The strength cannot be emphasized enough. Lakecia grew up in New York City's Washington Heights - and she picked up the vibe of her Dominican neighborhood. Merengue, Salsa - also the beloved sounds of Sly Stone and James Brown. On recorder first at a young age, she morphed to sax and Jazz at Fiorello La Guardia High School for the Performing Arts. She was INVITED to attend. Further (pardon me) ACKNOWLEDGEMENT (!!!) came her way at the prestigious New School University. There, Reggie Workman introduced our guest to the world in which she now resides.
That intro - as well as glorious mentors that believed in her gilded future - paved the way for the confidence that oozes out of this brilliant artist's every pore. She has her own group - she has her own horn section - she has been tapped for touring by Alicia Keys and Gregory Porter. Lakecia's name is known by Harry Belafonte, Missy Elliott, The Roots, Anita Baker, and Stevie Wonder. She played at Barack Obama's 2009 Inauguration. How much did WE accomplish in our 20's?!
With the variables of music in her background, the FEEL that she has for each, the way that she incorporates her passion into unearthly technique, Lakecia Benjamin is well on her way to Legendary status. It's HAPPENING. Once you hear her past work and the current album that has garnered UNREAL praise, you'll know why. It's amazing to this host that I'm telling you to join us on 11/5. Two p.m. Eastern. The inspired music starts at ONE.
