The late great Maya Angelou once said, “A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.” Poetry is a form of expression that allows us to articulate feelings and paints a picture of one’s life experiences. The words of many great poets such as Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, Essex Hemphill, James Baldwin, and Nikki Giovanni have captured the lives of marginalized and oppressed communities during the civil rights and love movements, have been shared and embraced by the mass all around the world. This shows the power behind words and they are agents of change.
