Since 9/11, Americans have seen their civil liberties infringed in ways previously unimaginable. Fear is used as a weapon against citizens who have learned to view every Muslim as a potential terrorist. The corporate media has further inflamed the hysteria by claiming that the US government has been infiltrated by individuals who want to impose Sharia law on all of us.

What Americans in the grip of fear and unreasoning anger do not appreciate is that the trick of demonizing minority groups to divide citizens and divert them from the true danger in their midst is as old as war itself. They do not seem to realize that when the government comes for them, there will be no one left to speak for them.

On December 12 our guest on Taking Back America was Laila Yaghi, who told us the story of her personal agony and that of her son, who was imprisoned for waht amounts to guilt by association. When you hear the details you will wonder to what extent you can trust the US government to ensure your civil rights.

Until we can learn to see each other as fellow Americans and citizens of the world community, there is no hope for democracy in America or the world. We are all in this together and only together can we assure our children a world where liberty and justice for all is not just a nice idea.
